Effects of Alcohol on Health

Liquor or alcohol refers to ethyl alcohol or ethanol. Pure alcohol is a colorless, volatile liquid with a spirit-like odor and pungent taste. Alcohol is produced by the fermentation of various sugary substances like rice, barley, molasses, grape juice, mahua(plant), etc.

Alcohol is a volatile and easily flammable substance that is produced in the Kohl distillation process from grains, white grape juice, etc. in the distillation process with the help of yeast or enzymes.

Alcoholism

Alcoholism:

                 Suppose a person becomes dependent on alcohol as a result of daily drinking and is unable to get out of this habit easily. In that case, the condition of the person is called alcoholism. This alcohol addiction can be observed among people from all walks of life. Alcoholism is more common among people under 40 years of age. Apart from this, alcohol addiction is more common among people from high or low levels of society.

Nature of Alcohol: Many people think that alcohol is a stimulant but in reality, it is a depressant that induces sleep and reduces pain and consciousness.


Causes of Alcoholism:

                                       All the factors that are generally considered to be responsible for alcoholism

are-
1. Drinking as part of social pressure, social and religious events.

2. A sense of freedom.

3. Drinks taste good.

4. Desire to be excited and desire to enjoy excitement.

5. An attempt to escape from depression or reality.

6. To remove social and physical discomfort.

7. Hoping to get rid of the monotony of everyday life.

Effects of Alcohol:

(1) Effects on the individual: 
                                           Alcohol consumption has various harmful effects on the body, such as:

(a) Effects on the Nervous System:

It decreases muscle coordination.

Consciousness begins to fade.

There is headache, fatigue, and reluctance to work.

Decreased judgment ability and memory.

Self-control, willpower, and eyesight are decreased.

(b) Effect on the Stomach: It increases gastric secretion. The mucous membrane of the stomach is inflamed due to Excessive alcohol consumption.

(c) Effects on the Liver: The liver is the most affected by alcoholism. Metabolism is not normal as liver cells are damaged. Alcohol is converted to a toxin called acetaldehyde in the liver. The liver synthesizes fatty acids from alcohol, stored in the liver and gallbladder. This results in decreased conversion of protein synthesis to glycogen. Alcohol consumption can cause liver damage.

(d) Effects on the Heart: Regular consumption of alcohol leads to fat accumulation in the walls of the heart and blood vessels, resulting in increased blood pressure and impaired normal functioning of the heart.

(e) Effect on Kidneys :

Drinking alcohol increases the amount of nitrogenous waste products in the bladder.

(f) Blood glucose level is decreased.

(g) Effect on pregnant woman: The physical and mental growth of the fetus is disturbed. Children become unhealthy and underweight due to it.

(h) Effect on Immunity: Alcoholics generally do not follow hygiene rules and hence, they are always malnourished and lose immunity.


(2) Socio-economic impact:

(a) Impact on the family: Alcoholics spend most of their earnings on alcohol despite the high price of alcohol. This results in financial problems and chaos in the family.


(b) Impact on society: Alcohol addiction is a social crime. Alcoholics gradually lose their morals and get involved in various criminal activities.

(c) Drunk driving: Drunk driving is dangerous because-

Due to reduced eyesight.

Due to reduced alertness and awareness.

Due to behavior becoming reckless.

Due to the reduced ability to accurately judge distance.


(3) Effects on sports performance:

(a) Even though an alcohol addict excels in sports, various systems of his body gradually become inactive. As a result strength, endurance, intelligence etc. are decreased. And he can't express his skills.

(b) Neuromuscular coordination is Decreased. As a result, the player's circulation of organs is obstructed.

(c) Alcohol gets mixed in the blood resulting in reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.

(d) Due to the accumulation of fat in the walls of blood vessels, the heart does not get enough oxygen during exercise.

(e) Overall, the player's game mentality is lost.
